After my last post “How I do a 3-card reading” I was asked about my daily tarot practice and any rituals I do surrounding that. I actually do have a daily morning card practice that I have been back in routine with since Mid-May, I fell out of my practice off and on for most of this year until I switched my focus and made my praxis more of a priority.
If there is a topic or something related to tarot that you would like me to break down more or share let me know in the comments!
My morning consists of several things and in this order:
Morning Chores
Field and Solar Adorations
Daily Draw
Light Study
Here’s a little breakdown of each thing I do! My morning may sound heavily loaded but in reality most of these things are fairly quick and I’ll note timing to give you a better idea.
Morning Chores
While mundane, it’s still a part of my routine. I start my morning around 4:30 to 5 am. I take a quick shower, let the dogs and hens out (sit and chat with our three hens for a few minutes) and check the garden while listening to the birds. I’m usually greeted by the ravens in our neighborhood and it always makes me smile! This gives me a chance to feel the morning sun on my face and get some fresh air. Once the animals have been fed, it’s iced coffee time for me before I head to the studio!
My morning chores usually take me about 30-45 min before coffee. It’s longer in the summer since I usually water the garden at this time as well.
Field and Solar Adorations
I start my morning ritual by simply lighting some incense at my desk and just basically say good morning to the Field*. I won’t go into detail since this is a more personal praxis. I then do solar adorations before I crack open my laptop and pull my card for the day. I’ve been doing solar adorations fairly consistently for some time now and it’s one ritual that stayed with me above all others, aside from LBRP. I typically do the Liber Resh vel Helios (sunrise) but I’m getting ready to take several courses through a teacher I really like and learn a different method. However I won’t go into details about this as well, I apologize.
Solar adorations have been a huge game changer for me and I‘ve noticed a big shift in my mood and focus during the day, not to mention feeling more myself. I can’t quite explain it, it’s something that needs to be experienced. I typically try to do adorations when I wake up and get to the studio, but during the winter months I like to solar adorations with the sunrise.
Field and solar adorations take me 5 minutes or less to do, it’s not long at all. I would rather have a quick morning praxis than an inconsistent praxis or none at all. Ritual comes down to one thing for me: INTENTION
* This is a term I adopted from Aidan Wachter that stuck with me
Daily Draw + Light Study
I’m merging these two things together since they connect. The main part of my morning consists of my daily draw. I know many like to pull more cards but I really like the flexibility of a single card, it shows up in so many ways and can pack a punch. My go-to daily question is:
“What am I being invited to pay attention to today?”
I love this question! It’s an open door for exploring and I believe I picked it up from Lindsay Mack, but I may have reworded it slightly through the years, I can’t remember. I typically pull my card like I noted in the previous post here, but I only pull one card off the top after I cut the deck and restacked the cards. This is a consistent card ritual for me: shuffle, cut, stack, tap and pull.
This takes me the longest since I like to take my time but I typically spend no more than 30 minutes with my card pull. I tend to think about the card throughout the day as well.
I like to treat my daily draw as a small study for the morning or day. Sometimes I look at the whole card, other times it’s aspects of it such as the corresponding Sephira, astrological connections, esoteric notes from other mentioned texts if I have the books, etc.
When I do a daily draw, I first like to look at the card and see what comes up for me naturally. I make some mental notes on what I’m thinking about and how I feel about the card, what planetary day it is for comparison and start writing about it for my daily post on social media. Once I get everything out of my brain, I start digging into some books for any relatable quotes that also resonate with the card or anything that jumps out at me in general.
My posts that I share on social media are mostly notes for myself as a public journal of sorts since I rarely keep a tarot journal these days, but the message is also there for others if it strikes them. However, I do log my daily draws into a spreadsheet on Google Sheets using a template that someone shared several years back (even though I messed up a few sections of it, oops)… It tracks the corresponding Sephiroth for minors, count of majors/minors/courts, frequency of cards pulled, pie charts and so much more! I keep a monthly spreadsheet and then move everything over to my yearly spreadsheet at the end of the month so I can keep track of the year data. This is also how I quickly can see what repeating cards I pull and when.
Then comes the study. I’m a Gemini who loves courses, heavy homework and esoteric studies (Moon in Scorpio). I’m curious about everything, whether it’s about the Hermetic Qabalah or how pencil erasers are made. I need to know these things, all the things lol!
My study consists of pulling out the Book of Thoth first and then other relating books (or videos) that help me dig into that specific card. My desk is a constant reflection of what’s on my mind that day, it’s truly an organized chaos.
My light study can be 30-60+ minutes depending on my time. I study for as long as I can until I’m interrupted by the dogs or the cat. Weekends I tend to close the studio door and get sucked into my studies with no care for the time… Unless I’m heading out on an early morning hike.
Rest of the Day
That’s about the end of my daily tarot practice and rituals, for the most part. If a card really struck a chord with me I’ll continue some studies later in the evening or finish my day with the book I’m reading at that time - right now I’m still reading Secrets of the Thoth Tarot Vol 1 and loving it to pieces! I also use the evening to catch up on an decan studies while binge watching history documentaries.
What does your daily tarot and rituals look like? I would love to hear!
