Today’s card is the 7 of Cups… Let’s dive in a bit! This card is ruled by Venus in Scorpio and the traditional title for this card is Debauch. There’s a lot of water in this card with Venus and Scorpio in play, and nothing to dry it out a bit so things are a bit drenched. Oddly enough, the Crowley-Harris’ Thoth version of this card is one of my favorites visually in the deck. What can I say? I’m a sucker for Exorcist vomit green, but the imagery really reflects the mood of this card.
Before in the 6 of Cups, we had pleasure and enjoyment, but now we have veered off the harmonious path (Netzach). This reminds me of turning a hobby that you enjoyed immensely into a way to make some extra money, you stop enjoying it because you’re too focused on making profits and putting quantity over quality.
When looking at the Asherah Tarot’s card, there is a face drowning in the waters below which reiterates the meaning of being swallowed up by what you’re trying to mask or drowning in.
This card in general reminds me of covering up how you’re really feeling, like pretending all is well but in reality it really isn’t. You are avoiding it all and just hope one day it’ll fix itself and everything will be rainbows and butterflies. In the Rider-Waite deck, the card appears in similar light where a figure if often depicted looking at seven cups filled with material items. It’s like letting your ego take over and focusing solely on what there is to gain.
“When gratifying our desires does not fulfill our needs we seek more of the same, without realizing it is our discrimination that is the problem.”
- Sarah Wheatley Asherah Tarot Guidebook
As a card of the day: The 7 of Cups invites you to take a moment and recognize what you may be avoiding. Spend a little time with yourself and work through these feelings so that they aren’t spilling out into your day, week or month. Resist the urge to indulge in ways that help you avoid the issues that you’re dealing with, a Band-Aid isn’t always the answer for long term solutions.
