This morning’s card pull from the Asherah Tarot was the 5 of Discs. In the Crowley-Harris Thoth deck this card is dubbed “worry” and rather than cringe when I saw that, I decided to dive in and pick it apart a bit!
No matter what card I pull, I always like to look at them through the lens of advice or a heads up. Something to keep in mind rather than “this is what will happen to you today, deal with it”.
The 5 of Discs is associated with Mercury in Taurus. With only knowing some basic astrology, I know that Mercury is closely tied to our communication and thinking; and Taurus being a fixed-earth sign is often linked to dependability and patience, yet can be slow or stubborn. Mercury in Taurus does indeed feel very much like worry and a bit like hopelessness when tied to the 5 of Discs.
It’s like that feeling when you thought a plan was foolproof, but ends up failing.
The 5 of Discs reminds me a lot of “counting your chicks before they hatch” since you’re under the assumption everything will work out just as it always has, but then it doesn’t… which causes worry due to rehashing it out in our mind over and over again. What did I do wrong? What did I miss? In reality, you probably did everything right and didn’t miss a damn thing… it just wasn’t in the cards at that moment.
I like what Sarah Wheatley says about this card:
“Perhaps we are expending our energy in the wrong places and at the wrong time, though the possibilities of new life are still there waiting to manifest. Out of bad comes good comes bad comes good, in an endless cycle…”
- Sarah Wheatley Asherah Tarot Guidebook
For me, this card today suggests that I try not worry about the results, but instead focus on what I can do when the results I expected fail. Have a backup plan! If something doesn’t work out in my day, try a different direction or approach and keep going. Don’t stress or worry. This card also makes me think about “impermanence” as seeing something already broken before it breaks (or in this case, failed efforts) so that I’m not so easily shaken when something doesn’t turn out like I had planned.
The 5 of Discs is also good advice to not give something all your energy if the chances are low or nonexistent when it comes to working out. Be realistic and be practical, worrying won’t fix anything other than just adding to the stress.
